The Terryville Black Sox are back, but in a different league due to COVID-19

There is no better sound for this baseball fan than the crack of a wood bat, and I finally got to experience that sound again on Thursday afternoon at Dunkin Donuts Park.

The Terryville Black Sox lost their Tri-State League season to the COVID-19 pandemic, but they got another chance to play in the Connecticut Twilight League.

Terryville played its first game in the league on Thursday against a new team, the Great Falls Gators. The Black Sox came away with a 3-1 win over the Gators.

Terryville used five pitchers in six innings because no one has thrown much. The names of four of those pitchers are very familiar to local baseball fans. Former Bristol Eastern standout and St. Paul Saints pitcher Tom Curtin started for the Black Sox. He was followed by former St. Paul Catholic standout Jake Kawiecki. Long-time Tri-State veteran Billy Armstrong was next on the mound, followed by Andrew Hinckley, who played for UConn-Avery Point and CCSU. Former Crosby standout and Seattle Mariners farmhand Kody Kerski was brought in to close the game and hit 93 MPH on the ballpark radar gun.

Look closer at the Terryville roster, and you’ll see plenty of familiar names. Dave Alarcon, Kenny Kerski, Justin McCulloch, Kyle Skidmore and Mike Vaccarelli are a few of those familiar names.
