There is no American Legion baseball this summer due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but another form is being played and Bristol has two teams in the new association.
Bristol put together U17 and U19 teams in the CT Elite Baseball Association. The player names should sound familiar to those who know Mum City baseball.
The Bristol U17 team, skippered by Bill Mason, is 2-0 following a 10-0 win in five innings over West Hartford on July 2 at Riley Field. Andrew Beaucar threw a five-inning no-hitter for Bristol that evening. Bristol led 2-0 entering the bottom of the fifth inning, but erupted for eight runs to win via mercy rule.
Bristol U17 began the season on June 27 with an 8-2 victory at Simsbury.
Bristol U19, led by head coach Jerry LaPenta, is 2-2 following an 8-3 win over Avon on Monday evening at Muzzy Field. Trevor Mays pitched six innings and improved to 2-0 on the season. The game was tied, 1-1, entering the bottom of the fifth inning, but Bristol scored four runs in the fifth and three more in the sixth to blow the contest open. Bristol scored its eight runs on nine hits.
Bristol U19 began its season by splitting a June 28 doubleheader at West Hartford. Bristol lost the first game, 3-2, but won the second, 3-1. Mays fired a complete game and gave up a single run on five hits in the West Hartford victory.
Bristol U19 lost the other game it played, 5-2 in 10 innings on July 2, to Berlin at Muzzy Field.
Both Bristol teams are scheduled to play Wednesday. The U17 team hosts Winsted at Riley Field while the U19 squad is home against Simsbury at Muzzy Field. Both games are scheduled for a 5:30 p.m. first pitch.
