The Sacred Heart softball team is just one of a bunch of teams from that school that is going through its final season. The school is scheduled to close at the end of this academic year.
It hasn’t been the easiest season for the Hearts, but they’ve won two straight games to improve to 4-10. The second of those two victories was a wild one, 6-5 over WCA, the NVL Brass Division leader, at Huntingdon Park.
Sacred Heart led, 5-1, entering the bottom of the sixth inning. WCA scored two runs in the sixth to cut its deficit to 5-3. The Hearts put up a run in the top of the seventh, but the Spartans came back with two in the bottom frame. Mikayla Krawitz’s one-out double drove in Alyssia Carillo and Xamiya Grubb to make the score 6-5. That’s when the game got really wild.
WCA’s Verannie Figuredo flew out to Sacred Heart left fielder Azhia Rockhead for the second out. The throw back into the infield got away, however, and pinch runner Kaitlyn Bassant made a go at scoring from second base. First baseman Julianna McClary pounced on the loose ball and fired it to Maria Codianni at home plate. Codianni tagged out Bassant, and the Hearts pulled out the 6-5 win.
For Sacred Heart, Sophia Audi went 3-for-4 with a double, two runs scored and an RBI while Jamie Baker added two hits, a run scored and two RBI. McClary scored three runs for the Hearts.
For WCA, Mikayla Krawitz went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI while Alysha Accentura tripled and singled. Kendra Cameron doubled and drove in two runs for the Spartans (6-8). The loss for WCA was its first in the division (5-1).
