The St. Paul baseball team will be one of the top two seeds when the NVL tournament begins on Saturday. Where the Falcons end up depends on what happens during Thursday’s games.
St. Paul, 17-1, hosts Wolcott at 4 p.m. while Woodland, also 17-1, plays at home against WCA. The game between the Hawks and Spartans begins 15 minutes earlier. St. Paul and Woodland split their two regular season meetings. Since the 7-2 win over the Hawks in Beacon Falls on May 11, the Falcons have defeated Torrington (10-0), Naugatuck (10-0) and Watertown (3-2).
The Watertown game, played on Tuesday at Al Deland Field in Watertown, had an intense conclusion. St. Paul led, 3-2, but Watertown loaded the bases with two outs. Falcon closer Mario Izzo had to deal with pinch hitter Ian Cronin with the tying and winning runs in scoring position. Izzo got to a 2-2 count, then struck out Cronin to preserve the victory. Izzo also went 3-for-4 with two doubles at the plate.
The NVL tournament begins Saturday with quarterfinal round games at the higher seed. Wolcott and Holy Cross will also be playing in the tournament.
