For starters…
St. Paul appears to have put the season-opening loss to Sacred Heart/Kaynor Tech in the rearview mirror.
The Falcons topped the Derby Red Raiders 36-13 last Friday night to move to 3-1 on the season.
Pierce Piana again led the formidable St. Paul rushing attack, carrying the ball 24 times for 129 yards and two touchdowns. Damien Rabis added 40 years and a touchdown. The Falcons didn’t attempt a pass.
Another crazy number…ONE.
That is the total offensive yards gained by the Derby offense against St. Paul’s defense. The Falcons forced a Red Raider and otherwise stifled their opponent.
Dom Aiello led the defensive charge with eight tackles (four solo, four assisted) and a sack. Two of Aiello’s tackles went for a loss.
Jordan Silva made six tackles (two solo, four assisted) and had a sack. Chris Dionne tallied five tackles (two solo, three assisted), including one for a loss. Eric Langland joined the sack party with one and added two tackles, including one for a loss.
St. Paul would love to keep its momentum — on offense and defense — this Friday night at Torrington (7 o’clock kickoff).
Big win for Bristol Central
The Rams pulled off a big 28-21 road win last Friday at Wethersfield.
Central trailed Wethersfield 21-7 after one quarter, but got back into the game with its ground attack and a solid defense.
On offense, Luis Medina carried the ball 17 times for 93 yards and two touchdowns.
Defense, however, is where the Rams made their name against the Eagles. It was Alex Lapes’ four-yard fumble return for a touchdown in the fourth quarter that gave Central its margin of victory. Justus Fitzpatrick led the way with nine tackles (six solo, three assisted). Fitzpatrick had an interception and forced a fumble.
Tom Nelligan had five tackles (four solo, three assisted, but three of them went for a loss. Jose Navedo tallied eight tackles (4-4), Cody Hildebrand had seven (3-4), Connor Staubley recorded six (3-3), and Mike Guzman added five (2-3). Staubley had a sack, and one of his tackles went for a loss.
Isaiah Miller, the team’s starting quarterback, made three tackles on defense, but two went for a loss.
Brett Adams was a perfect 4-for-4 on extra points.
Speaking of good defense…
Wolcott pitched a shutout in its 26-0 win over Watertown. It’s the second shutout for the Eagles in their last three games.
On offense, Ray Iorio carried 15 times for 165 yards and three touchdowns. Steve Urbanski caught a touchdown pass from Mike Polzella. Polzella threw for 120 yards, 110 to Urbanski (four catches) and ran for 44 yards.
Huge game this week for Wolcott, which goes down the valley to play undefeated Seymour. Here’s a look at that game.
And another good defensive effort…
Kennedy won for the third time in its first four games, 27-0 over Wilby.
The Eagles had three interceptions and recovered a Wildcat fumble. Kennedy held Wilby to 137 total yards of offense.
The Eagle offense was led by quarterback Joey Schaff, who had two rushing touchdowns. Daishawn Lamar and Marc Anthony Telusma each had one rushing touchdown, according to a roundup of the game on the Waterbury Republican-American website “The Zone”. Kennedy is 3-0 in the NVL Brass Division.
The Eagles go outside their division this Friday in a tough road game against perennial NVL power Ansonia. The Chargers are undefeated so far this season.
Holy Cross wins its second straight game
The Crusaders held off the Waterbury Career Spartans 28-18 on Saturday at Ray Snyder Sr. Field.
It was another big day for Adam Razza, who had the game-sealing interception return for a touchdown. Razza’s 50-yard return put Holy Cross up 28-12, according to a story from Mark Jaffee of the Rep-Am. Razza also had a three-yard touchdown reception.
DeAndre Wallace hauled in a 65-yard touchdown from Corey Fappiano.
Petteway accounts for three touchdowns
WCA quarterback Kyren Petteway had two touchdown passes and ran for another score in the loss to Holy Cross.
Petteway’s touchdown passes went for 7 and 27 yards. Petteway also scored on a 21-yard run, according to Jaffee’s story.
Positive steps for Bristol Eastern…
The Lancers put the Maloney Spartans in a 10-7 halftime hole at Muzzy Field.
Unfortunately for Eastern, Maloney won the second half 21-0 and the game by a score of 28-10.
Justin Marshall put Eastern ahead in the second quarter with a one-yard touchdown run, according to a roundup on the Hartford Courant’s website. Mikey Barrett tallied 101 yards for the Lancers, who are still looking for their first win.
