Week 9 football roundup: Holy Cross, Central pick up big wins

Can you believe that there are only three weeks left in the high school football regular season?

Well, believe it, because outside of a rescheduled game between Stonington and Windham, Week 9 of the high school football season has come and gone. Holy Cross and Bristol Central each picked up big wins as they push toward possible postseason berths. They were the only local teams to taste victory in Week 9. Crosby beat St. Paul on Monday, but that was during Week 8, according to the CIAC schedule.

Here’s what happened in Week 9:

FRIDAY
Holy Cross 42, WCA 12: Kevin Matiz returned two punts for touchdowns, one for 76 yards and the other for 34 yards, in the Crusader victory over the Spartans.
Tom Ligi ran for two touchdowns while Drew Caouette threw a pair of short touchdown passes, one to Jameson Fauth and the other to Mahkai Wilson. Holy Cross improved to 6-2 and is No. 6 in the Class S playoff rankings.
Carmelo Mojica threw a touchdown to Trevor Bassett and ran for another score for WCA, which fell to 3-4.
Bristol Central 34, RHAM 20: Victor Rosa ran for 304 yards on 35 carries and scored four touchdowns for the Rams, who won their seventh straight game.
Rosa also threw a touchdown to Tre Blair for Central, which improved to 7-1 and is No. 5 in the Class L playoff rankings.
Torrington 53, St. Paul 16: See my story about how St. Paul and Crosby each played two games in the same week.
Oxford 31, Wilby 28, OT: The Wildcats outscored the Wolverines 22-7 in the second half in Oxford to force overtime, but the home team made a field goal in the extra session for the win.
Aaron James and James Richards each had over 100 yards of offense, James through the air and Richards on the ground. James and Richards each ran for two touchdowns for Wilby, which fell to 2-5.
Naugatuck 48, Wolcott 7: The Eagles continued their gauntlet with a home loss to the Greyhounds and fell to 3-5.
Bloomfield 40, Bristol Eastern 3: Gavin Damboise’s field goal provided the lone points for the Lancers, who fell to 3-5 despite giving the undefeated Warhawks (8-0 ) fits for a portion of the game.
SATURDAY
Watertown 7, Crosby 6: See my story about how St. Paul and Crosby each played two games in the same week.
Bullard/Kolbe 40, Wilcox/Kaynor 18: The co-op put up its highest point total of the season, but fell to 0-7.
