Mowad leads local Class S swimmers with first place finish in 200-yard IM

Swimmers from Holy Cross, Sacred Heart and St. Paul took part in the Class S state meet on Tuesday at Hutchinson Natatorium on the campus of Southern Connecticut State University.

Crusader senior Madelynn Mowad was the lone winner, taking first place in the 200-yard IM. Mowad also swam the 100 breaststroke and finished fourth. Fellow senior captain Aiyana Ward swam the 50 and 100 freestyle events, finishing 17th in both.
Sacred Heart’s 200 medley relay finished fifth behind the efforts of senior Elizabeth Bussey, junior Ava Longo, junior Nicole Molina and sophomore Elizabeth Brown. Brown was also 11th in the 50 freestyle and 12th in the 100 backstroke. Longo claimed 11th in the 100 breaststroke. The Hearts took 12th in the 400 freestyle relay and 18th in the 200 freestyle relay. Bussey was 21st in the 100 backstroke and sophomore Nicole DaSilva took 22nd in the 100 breaststroke.
St. Paul junior Emily Haase finished 10th in the 100 breaststroke. The Falcons claimed 17th in the 200 medley relay and 19th in 200 freestyle relay.
Sacred Heart finished 12th in the team standings. Holy Cross took 20th and St. Paul tied for 22nd.
Weston won its fifth straight championship, and the NVL’s Seymour took second. Woodland claimed fifth place and Oxford was sixth.
