Monday’s state tourney recap: Kennedy wins four-set battle in Class L

Monday marked the first full day of the fall state tournaments for girls volleyball and girls soccer. Here’s what happened on that first full day of action:

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL
Class L first round
No. 14 Kennedy 3, No. 19 Guilford 1
What happened? The Eagles used a big third set win, 32-30, to claim a 2-1 lead in the match on the way to the victory over the Grizzlies. The set scores were 22-25, 25-17, 32-30, 25-15.
Alejandra Ruales passed out 33 assists for Kennedy, which improved to 15-6 overall. Shaunye Dunbar put up 18 kills and two aces while Julia Rusi contributed 15 kills and two aces. Alexa Ruales had 15 digs and five aces.
Who’s next? Kennedy faces No. 4 E.O. Smith, a 3-0 winner over No. 29 Wethersfield, on Thursday at 6 p.m. in Storrs.
No. 10 Bristol Eastern 3, No. 23 Torrington 0
What happened? The Lancers got 22 kills from Hannah Webber, including the 500th of her terrific season. Alyssa Adorno had seven aces for the recently crowned CCC champions, who improved to 19-5 overall. The set scores were 25-22, 25-21, 25-13.
Who’s next? Eastern faces No. 26 Windsor, a 3-1 upset winner over No. 7 New London, on Thursday at 6 p.m. in Bristol.
Class LL first round
No. 15 Bristol Central 3, No. 18 Farmington 0
What happened? The Rams got 33 assists, nine digs and two aces from Alex Rivera in a straight-set victory over their CCC foe. The set scores were 25-22, 25-16, 25-19.
Maddie Lodovico recorded 10 kills and seven digs while Grace Higgins added seven kills and nine digs for Central, which improved to 15-7 overall.
Who’s next? Central plays at No. 2 Greenwich, which had a first round bye, Thursday at 6 p.m.
Class S first round
No. 20 Holy Cross 3, No. 13 Weaver 1
What happened? The Crusaders came up with a solid four-set win on the road.
After dropping the second set, 27-25, Holy Cross won the next two sets to advance. The set scores were 25-17, 25-27, 25-17, 25-15. The Crusaders improved to 11-11 overall.
Who’s next? Holy Cross plays at No. 4 Aerospace, which had a first round bye, on Wednesday at 5 p.m. in Windsor.
Class M first round
No. 21 Waterford 3, No. 12 Wolcott 0
What happened? The Eagles lost in straight sets and saw their season come to an end with an overall record of 13-7. The set scores were 25-18, 25-18, 25-16.
Ashley Johnson had seven kills and four aces while Megan Zigadto added 14 assists and two aces.
The seniors: It was the final match for Johnson, Zigadto, Kaitlyn Ouellette, Aubree Bellemare, Emma Simpson, Jordan Chamberlain, Megan Prescott and Elizabeth D’Ettore.

GIRLS SOCCER
Class S first round
No. 15 East Granby 2, No. 18 St. Paul 1 (PK4-3)
What happened? The Falcons battled on the road, but lost on penalty kicks to the Crusaders in East Granby.
St. Paul finished with an overall record of 10-9.
The seniors: It was the final game for Samantha Naples, Arianna Griffin, Giana Roy, Reagan Davis, Danielle Regan, Jayla Johnson and Zoey Rubins.
Class M first round
No. 6 Cromwell 3, No. 27 Wolcott 0
What happened? The Eagles saw their season come to an end against the Panthers in Cromwell.
Wolcott finished with an overall record of 6-10-2.
The seniors: It was the final game for Ashlyn Desmond, Erica Bennett, Meghan Sullivan, Kailey Chieppo, Emma Daddona, Hailey Szep and Olivia Goffredo.
Class L first round
No. 6 E.O. Smith 3, No. 27 Bristol Eastern 0
What happened? The Lancers saw their season end in a loss to their CCC foe in Storrs.
Eastern finished with an overall record of 5-9-2.
The seniors: It was the final game for Grace D’Amato, Ciara Collins, Audra Porowski and Maura Cyr.
