HIGH 5 OF THE WEEK: Karly Martin named LEC Goalkeeper of the Week

Karly Martin, Western Connecticut State University soccer

The sophomore and former Bristol Eastern standout was named Little East Conference Goalkeeper of the Week after two solid games in goal for the Colonials.

Martin started the week with six saves and a shutout in a 3-0 victory over Ramapo College. She kept up the good work against Rhode Island College, notching three saves in a 3-1 win. WCSU remained undefeated in LEC play with the win over RIC.

Martin ranked third in the LEC in goals against average at 1.33, and third in save percentage at .755. She ranked fifth in saves with 37. Those rankings were through games played before Martin was named the conference’s top goalkeeper for the week.

Those numbers only improved on Monday, when she played 45 scoreless minutes in a 7-1 victory over Manhattanville College. Martin made two saves in one half of play and is 6-4 on the season.

Isaiah Miller, Wesleyan University football

It was 3rd and 2 early in the first quarter, and Bates College was looking to get some momentum going on its second drive. Miller, a sophomore linebacker and former Bristol Central standout, was having none of it.

On the snap, Bates running back Liam Spillane took a handoff toward his left and was met by a blur — Miller — wearing a Cardinal home jersey. Miller stopped Spillane cold for a four-yard loss, and Bates was forced to punt. It was one of two and half tackles for a loss that Miller compiled in the game. Those two and half tackles added up to six yards in lost yardage. Miller finished the day with seven total tackles, including five solo, in the 48-12 Wesleyan victory. The Cardinals improved to 3-0 on the season.

Miller more than tripled his season total for tackles in the win over Bates. Through three games, he has 10 total tackles (eight solo, two assisted) to go along with an interception.

Dathan Hickey, Yale University football

This former Bristol Central standout and Bulldog sophomore had another big game for the Bulldogs in a 27-16 victory over Cornell University.

Hickey had six tackles (three solo, three assisted) and pulled in not one, but two interceptions in the win at the Yale Bowl. The first interception, both of Richie Kenney, came at Yale’s 46-yard line with 7:44 left in the fourth quarter. Hickey was in the right place at the right time when teammate Jaelin Alburg tipped the pass with his right hand.

Hickey’s second interception came at the Yale 36 with 1:42 left in the game and ended any thought of a Cornell miracle. The Big Red trailed 27-16 at the time.

Hickey came up with a solo tackle and an assisted tackle within three plays when Cornell was threatening Yale’s end zone late in the first half. On 1st and goal from the Yale 8, Hickey tackled Harold Coles after a one-yard gain. On 3rd and goal from the Yale 7, Hickey and Josh Keeler combined to stop Coles after a three-yard gain. The Big Red were on the verge of a go-ahead touchdown, but instead had to settle for a 21-yard field goal and a 3-3 tie at halftime.

Joe Kalosky, Endicott College football

This former Holy Cross High School standout and Gull senior captain returned after sitting out two games with an injury, and he had a big day.

Kalosky completed 23 of his 30 attempts for 255 yards, three touchdowns and one interception in a 58-12 Endicott victory over Becker College. He has thrown for two or more touchdowns in 16 career games. Kalosky threw touchdown passes of 18 yards to Riley Shanley, 10 yards to Ryan Nelson, and 12 yards to Zach DeNike.

Endicott improved to 3-1 with the win. The 58 points scored tied for 10th in program history.

Regan Richard, Nichols College volleyball

This sophomore and former Wolcott standout is seeing plenty of playing time with the Bison.

Richard has played in all 13 games for Nichols (7-6 record) and made eight starts. She ranks fourth on the team in blocks with 5.0 and is fifth in kills (59), digs (48), service aces (15) and assists (10).

Richard posted a season-high seven aces in a Sept. 13 match against Fisher College. Her season-highs in kills (8) and points (9.5) came on Aug. 31 against Mitchell College. Richard’s season-highs for digs (11) and total blocks (2) occurred on Sept. 7 against Albertus Magnus College. She had a season-high two assists on Sept. 7 against Lehman College.

Richard is an outside hitter for the Bison.
