Bristol Eastern football tops Pomperaug for first win since 2017

Bristol Eastern football put together a team-wide solid effort on Saturday in a Connecticut High School Football Alliance game against South-West Conference foe Pomperaug.

The result was a 14-0 victory in front of the home fans at Bristol Eastern High School, and the end of a 17-game losing streak. The Lancers (1-2) won for the first time since Oct. 6, 2017, when they defeated Farmington, 19-12, also at home.

Bryce Curtin tossed a pair of touchdowns, one in each half, to lead the Eastern offense. Curtin hit Treyvon Daniel with a long touchdown down the Pomperaug sideline in the second quarter, and Jack Bachand added the extra point for a 7-0 lead. In the third quarter, Curtin and Logan Schenck hooked up on a pump-and-go route down the Eastern sideline for another touchdown. Bachand’s extra point made the score 14-0. From there, Eastern’s defense kept the lead where it was.

When Robert Mosback tackled a Panther ballcarrier in the backfield on fourth down late in the fourth quarter, the Lancers got the ball back. Eastern then lined up in everybody’s favorite football formation, the victory formation. Curtin took a pair of knees, and the Lancers celebrated a victory that was brought home by a great team effort.

Curtin’s touchdown passes were both great throws, but it was his offensive line that gave him time to throw the ball. The line also blocked well for Alex Marshall, who was able to do some damage running the football.

The Eastern defense, all 11 who were on the field at a given time, made sure Pomperaug didn’t sniff the end zone. There was plenty of good one-on-one tackles, along with some solid swarming to the ball by multiple defenders.

Bachand was not only perfect on his extra points, but he boomed a couple kickoffs into the end zone with a breeze at his back for touchbacks. A Bachand punt was also downed at the Pomperaug two-yard line during the second quarter.

It was a team victory in every sense of the word, and it was a victory that Eastern needed. It was also one that the Lancers deserved after the effort they put forth on a beautiful Saturday.
