TRACK AND FIELD ROUNDUP: Kaynor’s Steward wins two events in Class M

Kaynor Tech junior Se’Raya Steward had a huge day at the Class M outdoor track and field championship meet on May 29 at Willow Brook Park in New Britain. Steward earned three medals, two golds and one bronze.

Steward finished first in the 100m dash (12.88 seconds) and 200m dash (26.36), and she was sixth in the 400m dash (1:00.11). There were several other winners in the state track and field meets that took place this past week.

Also in the Class M meet, Wolcott junior Kathryn Rodrigues won gold in the 3200m (11:10.06) and took bronze in the 1600m (5:06.06).

In Class S, Sacred Heart senior Edward Williams Jr. won gold in the 110m hurdles (14.28) and broke the record set by Rodrigo Souza in 2009 (14.56). Williams took silver in the 200m dash (22.02).

In Class L, Kennedy senior Tariq Phillips won gold in the 200m dash (22.08) and took silver in the 100m dash (10.96).

Here’s what happened in each meet:

Class M (May 29)

The Kaynor Tech and Wolcott girls competed in this meet, held at Willow Brook Park in New Britain. On the boys side, it was Waterbury Career Academy and Wolcott.

Wolcott junior Shannon Burby medaled with her fifth place in the javelin (103’10”). WCA junior Jonathan Edwards took silver in the triple jump (42’6″) and tied for second in the high jump (5’10”). Wolcott junior Nicholas Bendtsen earned a silver in the 3200m (9:37.32) and senior Dean Howell medaled with a fifth place finish in the shot put (44’5″).

The Kaynor Tech girls tied for 11th as a team and Wolcott was 14th. The WCA boys finished 16th as a team and Wolcott was 19th.

Class MM (May 29, 30)

The Bristol Central girls competed in this meet, which was suspended by rain on May 29 and finished on May 30. The meet was held at Middletown High School on May 29, and Willow Brook Park in New Britain on May 30.

The top finish for the Rams was their 4x400m relay, which took fifth and medaled (4:12.04) behind the team of senior Adalia Malick, sophomore Salvatrice Bosco, sophomore Abigail Calfe and sophomore Emma Stone. Junior Kaiya Alexander medaled with a sixth place finish in the shot put (33’7.5″).

Bristol Central finished tied for 18th as a team.

Class S (May 30)

This meet was held at Willow Brook Park in New Britain. The Holy Cross, St. Paul and Sacred Heart girls competed in this meet, as did the Holy Cross and Sacred Heart boys.

Holy Cross sophomore Raquel Rosa earned a silver medal in the 400m dash (57.88) and medaled with a fourth place finish in the 200m dash (26.17). Sacred Heart senior Jenna French medaled with a fourth place finish in the 800m (2:21.86). St. Paul senior Melissa Lyder medaled twice, including a fourth in the long jump (16’1.5″) and sixth in the 100m hurdles (18.09).

Sacred Heart senior Nyron Drunnamanio medaled with a sixth place finish in the high jump (5’10”). Holy Cross senior Kyle Moser medaled in two events, finishing sixth in the shot put (42’10.75″) and discus (131’10”). Moser just missed medaling in the javelin (seventh, 135’10”).

The Holy Cross girls finished 12th as a team, followed by St. Paul (t-18th) and Sacred Heart (t-23rd). The Sacred Heart boys finished ninth as a team, followed by Holy Cross (t-17th).

Class L (May 30)

The Bristol Central, Wilby, Kennedy and Bristol Eastern boys competed in this meet, held at Middletown High School.

Bristol Central senior Hunter Peterson claimed silver in the high jump (6’2″) and the long jump (20’11”). Wilby sophomore Messiah Harling took silver in the triple jump (43’5.25″) and just missed another medal in the 100m dash (seventh, 11.47).

The Bristol Central 4x800m relay of senior Pacifico Flores, sophomore Austin Freve, senior Devin Flores and junior Jose Ramirez earned a silver medal (7:57.58). The Rams, and the gold medal winners from Hall, each broke the 2005 record of 7:52.96 set by Ridgefield. Ramirez claimed a bronze in 800m (1:57.02).

Wilby senior Leonardo DaGraca earned a bronze in the triple jump (42’10”) and medaled with a fifth place finish in the long jump (19’11.75″).

Bristol Eastern claimed a trio of fourth place medals from junior Jake Woznicki (300m hurdles, 41.57), senior Zachary Martin (pole vault, tie at 12’6″) and junior Kyle Rivera (pole vault, tie at 12’6″).

Bristol Central senior Jose Navedo medaled twice, finishing fourth in the 110m hurdles (15.64) and sixth in the 300m hurdles (42.96). Ram junior Galen Hickey medaled with a fourth place finish in the triple jump (42’3″) and sophomore Jakob Salinas did the same with a fifth place finish in the javelin (157’2″).

Wilby junior Chris Perez tied for fifth place and medaled in the high jump (5’10”), and Crosby senior Elijah Lewis just missed a medal in the 800m (seventh, 2:01.34).

The Bristol Central boys finished third as a team, followed by Wilby in 13th, Kennedy in 15th and Bristol Eastern in 16th.

Kennedy junior Christina Capozzi just missed a medal with her seventh place finish in the 100m dash (12.93).

State Open

This meet will be held on Monday at Willow Brook Park in New Britain. The field events are scheduled to begin at 1:30 p.m., with the track events beginning at 2 p.m.
