Six local singles players and four doubles teams qualified for the girls tennis Open championship, which began on Saturday.
Of those players, one singles player and one doubles team reached the second round. The singles player was Ava Longo of Sacred Heart, and the doubles team was Grace Carabetta and Lydia Feng of St. Paul.
Longo was in the lower bracket and defeated Foran’s Grace Hiza, 8-4, in the first round. Longo was eliminated by No. 14 seed Abby Murphy of Southington, 8-1, in the second round.
Carabetta and Feng defeated Plainville’s Sarah Tomczyk and Andrea Ybanez, 9-7, in the first round of the lower bracket. Carabetta and Feng were eliminated by South Windsor’s Jiz Yazon and Leah Polansky, 8-2, in the second round.
Two local singles players won opening round matches. Nhi Nguyen of Sacred Heart defeated West Haven’s Skylar Serenson, 8-3. Abigail Gorneault of Bristol Central defeated Kerianne Rodrigues of Wolcott, 8-3. Nguyen was eliminated by North Haven’s Julia Migliorini, 8-0, in the first round of the upper bracket. Gorneault was defeated by Weston’s Alexandra D’Aquino, 8-0.
One local doubles team advanced out of the opening round. Alexis Carabetta and Tessa Rogers of St. Paul won by default over Fitch’s Charlina Holloway and Mae Flax. Carabetta and Rogers were eliminated by Bolton’s Erica Dean and Lillian Minicucci, 8-0, in the first round of the upper bracket.
Julia Dzinski (Holy Cross) and Ximena Varela-Marin (St. Paul) played in opening round singles matches and were eliminated. Gabrielle Petroniro and Tiona Watts of Wolcott were eliminated in the opening round of doubles. Katherine Brown and Najma Braddock of Sacred Heart were eliminated in the first round of the upper bracket.
