Robert Morris University men’s basketball made its mark on defense in a 52-49 road victory over St. Francis Brooklyn on Thursday, and the former Sacred Heart High School big was right in the middle of it.
Petteway tied for the team-high in points with 13, but it was his work on the defensive end that stood out most. The 6-foot-8 senior tallied four steals and three blocked shots to go along with six rebounds. Petteway helped the Colonials to a 40-32 edge on the backboards against the Terriers.
On offense, Petteway made five of his 11 shot attempts in his 21 minutes. Robert Morris improved to 8-8 and has won four straight games. Petteway has played in all 16 games. He leads the way in rebounds per contest (5.7) and is second in points per game (10.9) and steals (21). Petteway does it coming off of the bench for 19.2 minutes per game.
Khadaijia Brooks, Marshall University basketball
Don’t look now, but this former Bristol Eastern standout has scored in double figures in each of her last three games.
Combine the scoring with Brooks’ proven rebounding ability (team-leading 6.4 boards per game), and the redshirt junior is a big piece of the puzzle for the Herd as they look to continue their solid start in Conference USA.
In her last three games, Brooks has gone for 13, 12 and 11 points. In a 75-63 victory against Delaware State on Dec. 29, Brooks contributed 13 points, nine rebounds, three assists and two blocks. She followed that up with 12 points, five rebounds, three blocks and two steals in the Conference USA opener, a 57-48 win over Old Dominion on Jan. 3. Brooks had a block and a steal to go along with her 11 points in a 63-62 victory against Charlotte on Jan. 5.
Brooks has started all 15 games this season for Marshall (8-7). She leads the team in rebounds per game and blocks (19). Brooks also has 14 steals on the season.
Emma Flynn, Amherst College ice hockey
The sophomore from Wolcott was named NESCAC Player of the Week for the week of Jan. 2 after great efforts for the Mammoths.
Amherst swept two games against William Smith over Dec. 29 and Dec. 30, and Flynn was a big part of the offense. She played a part in seven of the eight goals scored over the two games. Flynn scored a goal in both games, and she provided a total of five assists.
In the first game, Flynn scored with three seconds left in the first period to put Amherst up 3-2. She assisted on an Angelina Wiater score 9:32 into the third period for a 4-2 Mammoth lead. The goal wound up being a big one as William Smith got a goal back before losing 4-3.
In the second game, Flynn scored Amherst’s first goal, then assisted on its second goal as the Mammoths claimed a 2-0 lead 9:50 into the first period. William Smith tied the game with two straight goals, but Flynn assisted on two more scores from Amherst for a 4-2 victory. One goal came in the second period while the other occurred in the third period.
Flynn has played in 11 games and has tallied nine goals and 18 assists for a total of 27 points.
