The Wolcott Post 165 American Legion senior team jumped out to a 2-0 lead after just a half inning of its Sectional first round game at Glastonbury on Saturday afternoon.
Unfortunately for Wolcott, Glastonbury had seven at bats to get back into the game, and the host did come back. Glastonbury scored one run in the fourth inning, put up two more in the fifth to take the lead, and added one more in the sixth for insurance in a 4-2 victory at Riverfront Park.
Glastonbury, seeded ninth in the Northern Division of the state tournament, will play No. 8 Bristol tomorrow at 1 p.m. at Muzzy Field. Wolcott, seeded 16th, saw its season end at 13-12.
Isaiah Negretti took the loss for Wolcott. On offense, Matt Warren led Post 165 with a 3-for-4 day that included a run batted in. Jacob Gabriel (run scored), Negretti and Justin Proteau each had one hit. Vincent Gambino walked twice and scored a run.
Gambino led off the game with a walk, then Gabriel followed with a single. Gambino scored on a passed ball for the first run, then Warren brought Gabriel home with a RBI single.
Wolcott had a quick 2-0 and Negretti on the mound. Things were looking good for Post 165, but Glastonbury had other ideas.
A Drew Heymann RBI single in the bottom of the fourth inning cut Wolcott’s lead to 2-1. Back-to-back RBI singles by Aidan Scott and Tom Kuzoian gave Glastonbury a 3-2 lead in the fifth inning. Joe Mercier brought the last Glastonbury run home in the sixth inning on a Wolcott error.
Warren tried to keep Wolcott alive with a two-out single in the top of the seventh, but he was forced out at second on a ground ball to end the game.
