HIGH 5 OF THE WEEK: Booker earns top NECC weekly honor

Jordan Booker has always been capable of having big games on offense. He did it while attending Crosby High School in Waterbury, and now he’s doing it at Dean College.

Booker, a junior guard, was named New England Collegiate Conference Player of the Week after averaging 30 points, 4.0 steals and 3.5 assists per game over a two-game stretch. Dean won both games and is on a five-game winning streak. Booker shot 61.3 percent over the two games.

Booker scored 32 points to go along with four assists and four steals in a 111-104 win over Newbury College on Jan. 10. He was a terrific 12-of-14 at the foul line. Booker shot 8-of-14 from the floor in 39 minutes.

In the 78-61 win over Becker College on Jan. 12, Booker went for 28 points, four steals, three rebounds and three assists. He was 11-of-17 shooting in 39 minutes.

Olivia Bart, Hartwick College women’s swimming and diving

Bart has been a strong swimmer for the Hawks, and the junior was recently recognized for her efforts by her conference.

The former Bristol Eastern standout was named the Empire 8 Conference Women’s Swimming and Diving Athlete of the Week after taking part in four different victories. She won the 50-yard freestyle in 24.87 seconds and the 100 freestyle in 54.96 as an individual competitor.

Bart, a junior, swam the anchor leg of the winning 200-yard medley and 400 freestyle relay events. She teamed with Allison Borowiak, Gina Grauer and Emma Reining to finish the medley relay in 1:54.87. Bart teamed up with Grauer, Abigail Schwartz and Channing Lewis to complete the 400 freestyle relay in 3:46.34.

Ashley Elder, Southern New Hampshire indoor track and field

The former Bristol Central multi-sport athlete has competed in four shot put events for the Penmen so far this winter, and she has won each one of them.

Elder, a senior, was named to the Northeast-10 Conference Honor Roll for her efforts in two different meets. She won the shot put at the Spartan Invitational on Jan. 11 on Staten Island, N.Y., then did it again at the Dartmouth Relays on Jan. 13. You read that right. Elder won the shot put twice in a three-day span at two different meets.

Elder’s best effort at the Spartan Invitational was 44 feet, 8.25 inches. She won the shot put at the Dartmouth Relays with a throw of 46 feet, 7.84 inches.

Pat Etter, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute football

It was the senior season for this former St. Paul standout, and he was part of the ECAC Division III Team of the Year.

RPI had an historic season. It won 10 games, the second-most in a season in program history. The Engineers claimed a second straight Liberty League title and a second consecutive NCAA playoff appearance. The two straight NCAA playoff appearances are a first in program history.

RPI won its first two games in the playoffs before falling in the quarterfinal round. The Engineers won awards for their work both on and off the field.

Etter played in 10 games in his senior season. He had eight catches for 62 yards.

Mike Palmieri, Salve Regina University men’s basketball

This freshman and former St. Paul floor general has started his last three games for the Seahawks.

Palmieri made his first start on Jan. 10 in a game at Western New England University. He played 32 minutes and sored 15 points on 6-of-11 shooting from the floor. Those 11 attempts including six 3-pointers, which Palmieri made three of. He also had two rebounds, one assist and one steal. Salve Regina won the game 77-70.

Palmieri has played 27 and 29 minutes in his last two starts and has scored seven and eight points. For the season, Palmieri has played in 15 games and is averaging 14.3 minutes per contest.
