A look at the NVL baseball and softball standings brings three common schools to the fold — Holy Cross, Wolcott and St. Paul.
Holy Cross and Wolcott baseball are both 5-0 and sit atop the overall NVL. St. Paul is right behind the two at 4-1. The Crusaders and Eagles are scheduled to play each other on April 30 at 3:45 p.m. at Wolcott High School. Wolcott plays St. Paul on May 9 at 4 p.m. at St. Paul, then Holy Cross makes the trip to Bristol on May 15 at 3:45 p.m.
Bristol Eastern is 4-1 to start the season, and Kaynor Tech is 3-1.
SOFTBALL: Watertown (5-0) and Seymour (4-0) are the top two teams, but Holy Cross, St. Paul and Wolcott are right behind them, as is Sacred Heart. All four teams are 4-1 on the season. Here’s the schedule between the four local squads:
April 20: Holy Cross at Sacred Heart, 11 a.m.
April 30: Holy Cross at St. Paul, 4 p.m.
May 2: Wolcott at Sacred Heart, 3:45 p.m.
May 9: St. Paul at Wolcott, 3:45 p.m.
May 14: Sacred Heart at Holy Cross, 3:30 p.m.
Kaynor Tech is the lone undefeated area team at 4-0.
Quick note: Wolcott is slated to host Watertown tomorrow at 4 p.m.
BOYS LACROSSE: St. Paul is rolling over opponents and has a perfect 5-0 record.
BOYS TENNIS: Wolcott is 5-0, but it has a very busy week (weather permitting). The Eagles face Naugatuck, Watertown and Holy Cross (3-1) before a showdown against Torrington (5-0). Those matches are scheduled for Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Holy Cross plays against Torrington on Tuesday, Wolcott on Thursday and Sacred Heart on Friday.
GIRLS TENNIS: Sacred Heart is perfect at 5-0, followed by Holy Cross and St. Paul at 3-1. The Hearts play the Crusaders twice in the next two weeks. Holy Cross has the two matches against Sacred Heart, plus one against St. Paul. The Falcons already played and defeated the Hearts this season.
BOYS TRACK AND FIELD: Holy Cross is a perfect 6-0, followed by Sacred Heart at 5-1. The Crusaders beat the Hearts in the season opener.
GIRLS TRACK AND FIELD: Holy Cross is 4-1-1 with a loss to Torrington and a tie against Wolcott.
NOTE: When compiling these standings, I looked at teams that have played at least four contests. Many haven’t because of the weather, so they didn’t get into this particular story.
