Tyson Brenes (5) and Parker Zynda (3) each came up big for the Wolcott boys soccer team in its 3-1 win over WCA on Monday afternoon in Naugatuck Valley League action at Joe Monroe Field.
It seemed fitting that the guy that was all over the place for the Wolcott boys soccer team put away Monday afternoon’s Naugatuck Valley League match against WCA at Joe Monroe Field.
Eagle senior Parker Zynda scored with just under two minutes left to give his team their final goal in a 3-1 win over the Spartans. Wolcott improved to 2-0-1 with the win while WCA fell to 1-1-1. Eagle head coach Bryan Plona loved the effort he saw from Zynda, whether it was going after 50-50 balls, battling players like Duarte on defense, or putting the ball into the box on corner kicks.
Before Zynda put the game away, sophomore Tyson Brenes put the Eagles on his back. Less than seven minutes into the match, Brenes got a run in on the WCA goal and put it past Spartan senior goalkeeper Silas Creaven for a 1-0 lead. Brenes’ second goal came under 15 minutes into the second half off a great pass from senior Mandjou Keita. That goal gave the Eagles a 2-0 lead.
A little over nine minutes later, however, WCA got on the board when senior Will Mowrey blasted a left-footed shot past Wolcott senior goalkeeper Sam Berninger. The score was 2-1 in favor of the Eagles, but there was 16:10 left in the match. Wolcott did what it needed to do to hold off WCA, then Zynda put the Spartans away. Damian Georges had an assist for the Eagles, and Berninger finished with nine saves. Mowrey’s goal came off an assist from Xavier Duarte. Creaven finished with seven saves for WCA.
