As of today, the best way for a high school team to play a spring sports game in Connecticut is to get the heck out of Connecticut. This weather sucks, to put it bluntly.
The Wolcott baseball and St. Paul softball teams are doing just that. The Eagles are in Tennessee for a pair of “non-state” games, and the Falcons are at Disney World for ESPN’s softball spring training.
Here’s a bit about each team’s trip:
WOLCOTT BASEBALL

The Eagles opened their two-game Volunteer State road trip on Saturday at head coach Tary Scott’s Alma mater David Crockett High School. Before the game, Scott and Crockett mentor Nick Lingerfelt presented a specially-made bat to former Crockett head coach Warren “Sonny” Miller.
When the game was played, Wolcott claimed a 9-5 win over Crockett. Dane Hassan (triple), Jack Drewry and Trey Nastri each had three hits and two RBI. Hassan and Drewry also had two runs scored. Tino Ciarlo (triple) had three hits and scored two runs and Ethan Gillotti added a single and two runs. Anthony Ligi had two hits and a RBI and Nick Trager doubled, drove in a run and scored a run. Wolcott scored one run in the third to tie the game at 1-1, then erupted for a pair of four-run frames in the fourth and fifth to race to a 9-1 advantage.
Jack Drewry pitched the first four innings and claimed the victory. He gave up one run on one hit, struck out six and walked one.

The weather even affected the Eagles in Tennessee. Wolcott’s game against Chuckey-Doak has been moved from today at Wednesday at 4:15 p.m.
ST. PAUL SOFTBALL

The Falcons began play at Disney World on Friday under sunny skies with warm temperatures.
St. Paul last made the trip to Disney World in 2016. The Falcons played and beat Plainville in the only CIAC eligible game 11-0 on April 13. The same teams have also faced each other in Disney in other seasons. In past seasons, St. Paul’s varsity and junior varsity teams have both had the chance to play games while in Disney.
This time around, the official CIAC varsity game is against Westerly, R.I., tomorrow at 10 a.m.
