With Week 1 of the high school football season in the books, I took a look at the stats area teams put up in their first games.
For starters…
Kyren Petteway put up crazy numbers for the Waterbury Career Academy in a 58-13 win over Wilby. Petteway totaled an area-leading 347 yards and seven touchdowns. It was a heck of a varsity debut for Petteway and his Spartan teammates. On defense, Josiah Rivers had 10 total tackles (6 solo, 4 assisted).
Sacred Heart/Kaynor Tech’s lethal passing attack
Trey Dawson lit up the passing charts for the Waterbury co-op in a 34-22 win over St. Paul. Dawson was 20-for-35 for 326 yards and four touchdowns. Courie Stevenson caught five passes for a team-leading 131 yards and two touchdowns. Tyler Rudolph led the way in catches with nine and tallied 122 yards to go along with a touchdown. Jordan Robinson (3-43) had the other touchdown reception.
Crosby efficient on offense
The Bulldogs had a nice balance of run and pass in a 41-29 win over Woodland. Everyone knows about Crosby’s passing attack, and Mike Marshall was a solid 9-for-11 (with one INT) for 103 yards and a touchdown to Ricardo Morales (1 catch, 23 yards). Marshall completed passes to five different receivers. The Bulldogs were more impressive with the run. Donte Detanto ran 17 times for 127 yards and two touchdowns. Jhymel Ervin rushed eight times for 76 yards and two more scores. Detanto also had six tackles, one behind team leader Mason Sackett.
Kennedy’s balanced rushing attack
The Eagles got 47 or more yards from four different backs — Daishawn Lamar (60), Marc-Anthony Tulesma (57), Rhakeem Henry (54) and Jacob Colon (47) in a strong rushing effort to tally a 36-21 victory over Holy Cross. Colon caught a 38-yard touchdown pass from Joey Schaff. Henry had two rushing touchdowns while Tulesma, Colon and Schaff each contributed one rushing score.
On a hot afternoon at Holy Cross, the use of several different running backs kept the Kennedy attack moving efficiently. The offensive line helped that cause with some solid blocking.
Piana, Razza shined in losses
St. Paul’s Pierce Piana and Holy Cross’s Adam Razza both put up great numbers in their team’s losses. Piana carried 22 times for 198 yards and two touchdowns for the Falcons while Razza had six receptions for 134 yards and the first Crusader touchdown in Alumni Field history.
Some other stats to note
Bristol Central didn’t have much going for it in a 47-0 loss to Windsor, but here’s a couple notables. Luis Medina had 16 carries for 56 yards, plus 87 yards in returns. He had to leave the game due to cramps, according to the story from Dave Greenleaf.
For St. Paul, Dom Aiello had a sack and blocked three extra points.
Wolcott lost big to Ansonia at home, and it wasn’t a fun night. Mike Polzella led the Eagles with 79 rushing yards and a touchdown.
Wilby had a lopsided loss to Waterbury Career Academy. Rahmal Payton led the Wildcats with 61 yards rushing and a touchdown.
Bristol Eastern couldn’t get its offense going in a shutout loss to E.O. Smith. Justin Marshall did what he could and totaled 41 yards overall.

Correction: My apologies to Kennedy’s Joey Schaff, who had a rushing touchdown in addition to a passing touchdown against Holy Cross. I misidentified the touchdown rusher on the fourth score for the Eagles, which was Schaff.
