The top-seeded Holy Cross boys soccer team needed overtime Thursday to win its first game of the state tournament, 3-1, over No. 17 East Hampton in a Class S second round matchup at Municipal Stadium’s Ray Snyder Sr. Field.
That was the wildest game of the day for area teams. Here’s what happened Thursday:
BOYS SOCCER
Class S second round
No. 1 Holy Cross 3, No. 17 East Hampton 1, OT
What happened? Patrick Osiecki scored a goal in each of the 10-minute extra sessions that comprise overtime in high school soccer in Connecticut in the state tournament, up until the state final.
Aiden Coelho had the first goal, which came in the first overtime after 80 minutes of scoreless play in regulation. Coelho also had two assists, and his brother Landon added one assist. Cameron Sivilla made five saves. The Crusaders improved to 18-0-2 with the win.
Who’s next? Holy Cross will host No. 8 Canton, a 4-1 winner over No. 9 Oxford (NVL), on Saturday at 2 p.m. at Crosby’s Jimmy Lee Stadium in a quarterfinal round matchup.

Class M second round
No. 1 Nonnewaug 1, No. 16 WCA 0
What happened? The Spartans lost a tough game and saw their season come to an end with a record of 10-6-3.
WCA keeper Silas Creaven made an amazing 23 saves, but counterpart Dylan Chung of Nonnewaug only had to make five as the Chiefs kept the pressure up on the Spartans throughout the game. The amazing thing for WCA is that Creaven is only a freshman.
The seniors: It was the last game for Keegan Souliere, Devin Pais, Michael Rodriguez, Icaro Pamplona, Ermis Paguada, Nedim Selmani and Erinc Ozen.
Class L second round
No. 9 Guilford 1, No. 8 Bristol Central 1
What happened? The Rams saw their season end in a tough loss to the Grizzlies, who got a goal from Juan Salas-Romer with 9:26 remaining in regulation to advance.
Central ended its terrific season with a record of 12-4-2.
The seniors: It was the last game for Mark Palma, Adam Mehdi, Umar Malick, Hayden Caudill, Carson Rivoira, Derek Guerrero, Harlens Feliz Alcantara, Charles Pittman, Ethan Crumrine, Tyler D’Agostino, Beckett Hennessey and Mitchell Peterson.
GIRLS VOLLEYBALL
Class L second round
No. 10 Bristol Eastern 3, No. 26 Windsor 0
What happened? The Lancers won in straight sets, and as it turned out, they secured home match in the quarterfinal round. The set scores were 25-13, 26-24, 25-5.
Eastern improved to 20-5 with the win. Hannah Webber paced the Lancers with 16 kills and six aces while Abby Jones added 26 assists. Lauren Bender had nine kills, four aces and five digs while Alex Shorette added two kills, four aces and four digs. Alyssa Adorno tallied five aces and three digs while Adrianna Reay contributed three kills.
Who’s next? Eastern will host No. 18 St. Joseph, a 3-0 winner over No. 2 Pomperaug, on Saturday at 5 p.m. at Bristol Eastern High School.
No. 4 E.O. Smith 3, No. 13 Kennedy 1
What happened? The Eagles saw their season end in a four-set loss to the Panthers in Storrs. The set scores were 25-20, 24-26, 26-24, 25-14.
Kennedy ended a strong season with a record of 15-7.
The seniors: It was the last game for Rosa Chavez, Evi Duro, Shaunye Dunbar, Alejandra Ruales, Julia Rusi and Alexandra Ruales.
Class LL second round
No. 2 Greenwich 3, No. 15 Bristol Central 0
What happened? The Rams saw a solid season end with a straight-set loss to the powerful Cardinals in Greenwich. The set scores were 25-12, 25-14, 25-5.
Central’s season ended with a record of 15-8.
The seniors: It was the final match for Sarah Roman, Abby Pirog, Gabriella Watson and Olivia Fiorito.
