Wednesday’s state tourney recap: Holy Cross wins on the pitch and the court

Holy Cross had a good day on the soccer pitch and the volleyball court on Wednesday, picking up a victory on each playing surface in the state tournament.

The Crusader girls soccer team, seeded second in Class S, claimed a 2-0 win over No. 15 East Granby at Municipal Stadium in the second round. The Crusader girls volleyball team, seeded 20th in Class S, took down No. 4 Aerospace, 3-1, on the road in the second round.

Kaynor Tech girls volleyball also played Wednesday, and there were local divers who competed in both Class S and Class L. Here’s more about each event:

GIRLS SOCCER
Class S second round
No. 2 Holy Cross 2, No. 15 East Granby 0
What happened? Holy Cross got a goal from Devon Bushka, along with a goal and an assist from Grace D’Amico, in the victory. It was the first game for Holy Cross since its NVL tournament final loss to Woodland. Holy Cross had a first round bye in the state tournament.
Rachel Healey only needed to make two saves for the clean sheet for Holy Cross, which improved to 16-3-1.
Who’s next? Holy Cross plays No. 10 Thomaston (13-4-1) on Friday in a quarterfinal round game at Crosby’s Jimmy Lee Stadium at 4 p.m.

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL
Class S second round
No. 20 Holy Cross 3, No. 4 Aerospace 1
What happened? Tyra McKoy had six aces, one ace and two digs while Michaela Bell added 15 digs and two aces for the Crusaders, who won on the road for the second time in as many state tournament matches. The set scores were 25-18, 16-25, 25-12, 25-16.
Holy Cross advanced to the quarterfinal round for the first time since 2017, when it reached the semifinal round as a No. 12 seed.
Who’s next? The Crusaders play at No. 12 Griswold (14-7) on Friday in a quarterfinal round match at 6 p.m.
Class M second round
No. 13 Ledyard 3, No. 4 Kaynor Tech 0
What happened? The Panthers saw their season come to an end in straight sets against the Colonels, who play in the ECC. Alison Mancilla had three service points, one ace and two digs. The set scores were 25-13, 25-19, 25-15.
Kaynor Tech finished its season with an overall record of 18-5. The Panthers were CTC semifinalists this season.
The seniors: It was the last match for Mancilla, Genesis Ginorio, Yasmina Benjamin, Alivia Dunn, Nancy Nham and Brianna Bonilla.

CIAC DIVING
Class S
What happened? St. Paul’s Adriana Raymond finished 11th with a score of 285.00.
Class L
What happened? Bristol Eastern’s Alexsia Newman finished 25th with a score of 180.30.
