STATE QUARTERFINAL RECAP: Holy Cross, Eastern girls advance on pitch, court

The Holy Cross girls soccer and Bristol Eastern girls volleyball teams are the only locals standing after two days of quarterfinal action. The Crusaders won Friday while the Lancers did so Saturday.

The season ended for the Holy Cross girls volleyball and boys soccer teams in quarterfinal losses. Here’s more about what happened over the past two days:

FRIDAY

GIRLS SOCCER
Class S quarterfinal round
No. 2 Holy Cross 5, No. 10 Thomaston 1
What happened? The Crusaders leapt out to a 4-0 halftime lead on the way to a convincing victory over the Bears at Crosby’s Jimmy Lee Stadium.
Bella Milburn had a hat trick while Devon Bushka and Jenna Tracey each added a goal. Bushka and Ella Atkins both had two assists while Kaitlyn Alagno added one assist, and Rachel Healey notched six saves.
Who’s next? Holy Cross (17-3-1) will play No. 6 Somers, a 1-0 overtime winner over No. 19 Old Saybrook, this coming week at a time and place to be determined.

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL
Class S quarterfinal round
No. 12 Griswold 3, No. 20 Holy Cross 0
What happened? The Crusaders saw their season end in straight sets in Griswold. The set scores were 25-12, 25-13, 25-19.
Holy Cross saw its season end with a record of 12-12.
The seniors: It was the last match for Nyasia Smith, Lyvia Bartoli and Michaela Bell.

SATURDAY

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL
Class L quarterfinal round
No. 10 Bristol Eastern 3, No. 18 St. Joseph 0
What happened? The Lancers won in straight sets to advance to their first semifinal since 2018. The set scores were 25-20, 25-10, 25-15.
Hannah Webber hammered 24 kills to go along with her three aces, three digs and two blocks. Abby Jones had 32 assists, Alex Shorette served up 10 aces and Lauren Bender tallied 10 kills and nine digs. Alyssa Adorno had six aces while Sarah Lacouture added three aces.
Who’s next? Bristol Eastern (21-5) will play No. 11 Simsbury, a 3-2 winner over No. 3 East Lyme, on Wednesday at 6 p.m. at a location to be determined.

BOYS SOCCER
Class L quarterfinal round
No. 8 Canton 2, No. 1 Holy Cross 0
What happened? The only loss of the Crusader season came in their last game, and it left the team devastated when the final horn sounded.
Cam Sivilla made two saves for Holy Cross, which finished a tremendous season with an NVL championship and an 18-1-2 record.
The seniors: It was the last game for Sivilla, Aiden Coelho, Nick Turner, Patrick Osiecki, Jaiden Paniagua, Garrett Gigarsky, John Walsh and Louis Coptsias.
