Waterbury Career Academy baseball played its second game in as many days to open the season, and it came up with a huge 1-0 win over Wolcott at Washington Park.
Tino Toucet of the Spartans and Brett Adams of the Eagles put up zeros for the first four and a half innings. WCA (2-0) scored the game’s lone run in the bottom of the fifth inning. Andrew Petro singled to lead off, then advanced to second on Jonathan Castro’s sacrifice bunt. Petro reached third on a passed ball, then a grounder to short by Will Carillo scored Petro.
Adams didn’t allow another run, but it was the only run Toucet needed. Toucet threw the CIAC limit 110 pitches before being pulled with two outs in the top of the seventh. Jacob Torres struck out the final batter on three pitches. Toucet struck out seven and walked two in his 6 2/3 innings. Adams struck out nine, walked two, and hit one in his six innings.
There were a combined nine hits in the game, seven of which were singles. Wolcott’s Tyle Bzankalski and Trey Nastri each had a double. No player had more than one hit in the game. The game was the season opener for the Eagles.
