High school boys soccer was the CIAC state tournament sport contested in the area on Tuesday.
Besides No. 7 St. Paul, No. 13 Holy Cross was a winner in Class S first round action. The Crusaders outlasted No. 20 SMSA 2-1 at a rainy Ray Snyder Sr. Field. All goals were scored in the first half of the game. Holy Cross got on the board first with 20:06 left in the first half, then SMSA tied the game with 10:22 to play. The game-winning goal came just 20 seconds later for the Crusaders, who move on to play at No. 4 Morgan (Clinton) on Thursday at 2 p.m.
No. 16 Bristol Eastern lost a 2-1 heartbreaker to CCC foe Maloney, the No. 17 seed after the Spartans outshot the Lancers 4-3 on penalty kicks. Bristol Eastern led the Class L first round game 1-0 at the half on a goal by Jake Woznicki. Maloney tied the game in the second half, and 100 minutes of regulation (80) and overtime (20) play weren’t enough. It was the final game for Lancer seniors Patrick Brady, Connor Errato, Konrad Olekszyk, Jared Greger, Benjamin Chiasson, Roger Jimenez-Pulla and Gabriel Soucy.
No. 14 Crosby also saw its season end in a 1-0 loss to No. 19 North Haven in a Class L first round game at Jimmy Lee Stadium. It was the final game for Bulldog seniors Alex Allaico, Tyrece Parker, Anthony Orellana, Shaquille Downswell, Kweku Arthur-Amissah and David Torres.
No. 29 Kennedy fell at No. 4 South Windsor by a score of 3-0. Senior goalkeeper Abraham Jimenez stopped 15 shots in his final game. It was also the final game for fellow Eagle seniors William Mahony, Brian Portela, Jaren Gatling, Michael Trinkely, Ray Lo, Tariq Phillips and Joni Pasholli.
No. 31 Wolcott was eliminated by No. 2 Granby Memorial by a score of 3-1 in a Class M first round game. It was the final game for Eagle seniors Jarren Barnes, Sean Cepelak, Robert Romano, Enes Dede, Daniel DosSantos, Dylan Tumel, Cody Fejzulai, Kevin Couillard, Cameron Gervase, Jonathan Rogozinski, Ryan Wood and Ryan Checo.
