It was an afternoon like many others this spring on Tuesday at Wakelee School.
It was cold, and it was gray. There were even rain drops and snow flurries in the sky for the majority of the Wolcott varsity softball game against Watertown. Hoodies, gloves, jackets and blankets were the order of the day for players, coaches, parents and other fans.
Against that backdrop, Wolcott played undefeated Watertown. The Eagles played a great game and won 5-0, handing the Indians their first loss. Both teams are 5-1.
Many had a hand in Wolcott’s win, led by the pitching of Nicole Antonowicz. The right-hander fired a complete game two-hitter, struck out eight and walked only one.

On offense, the Eagles got major contributions from Sarah Hughes, Josie Cammarata and Marissa Morales. Hughes doubled in the bottom of the second inning to drive in Alexis Boyce with Wolcott’s first run.
The Eagles put up two more runs in the third. Morales reached on an error, and Jayda Cavanaugh scored on the play. Cammarata followed with a hard single up the middle to bring home Morales and make it 3-0.
In the fifth, Morales and Cammarata put an explanation point on the victory. Morales doubled to lead off the inning, then the right-hand hitting Cammarata launched a long home run to right center with one out to make the score 5-0.
Wolcott plays at Ansonia today at 3 p.m., then heads to Torrington on Friday for a 4 p.m. contest.
