Vargas, Boyce earn weekly conference honors before seasons shut down

Former local standouts Jeremiah Vargas and Alexis Boyce earned weekly honors in their respective college conferences before their seasons were canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Vargas, who played for Kennedy and The Taft School, was a senior pitcher for Stonehill College. He earned Northeast-10 Conference Pitcher of the Week honors after firing 7.2 innings of scoreless ball in a 5-0 win over Caldwell University. He gave up four hits, struck out five and walked three on the way to his second victory of the season. Vargas was 2-0 and pitched 13.1 innings over five appearances with a 2.70 ERA.

Boyce, who played for Wolcott, was a freshman catcher at Rhode Island College. She earned Little East Conference Rookie of the Week honors after ripping up opposing pitching over a six-game span. In those six games (RIC went 5-1), Boyce batted .471 (8-for-17) with five runs scored, eight hits, five doubles, a home run and four RBI. In two games, Boyce was 4-for-4 and 3-for-3. In eight games, she hit .417 (10-for-24) with eight runs scored, five doubles, one home run and five RBI.
