The Holy Cross girls basketball team enters the 2022-23 season with a target on its back. That’s what happens when you win a state championship and finish as the lone undefeated team in the state. The first team to get a shot at Holy Cross was Mercy-Middletown. The Tigers, who lost by just four points at the Tim McDonald Gymnasium last year, beat the Crusaders, 56-51, on Wednesday night at Mercy High School. It was the first loss in 44 games for Holy Cross, and it was the season opener for both teams. It was also a matchup of top 10 teams in the state. The Crusaders came in at No. 2 while the Tigers were No. 10.Holy Cross senior star Mya Zaccagnini, who received her official acceptance letter from Division I Iona University earlier at school, led all scorers with 23 points.Note: The score of last year’s Holy Cross won over Mercy was 55-51.
