Tuesday’s state roundup: Holy Cross girls top Somers, reach Class S soccer final

The No. 2 Holy Cross girls soccer team faced No. 6 Somers on Tuesday night at New Britain’s Veterans Stadium, the site of the greatest triumph in program history.

On the same synthetic turf where the Crusaders captured the 2019 Class S state title, they booked their return appearance in the Class S final with a 3-0 semifinal win over the Spartans. Holy Cross (18-3-1) will play No. 24 Northwest Catholic-West Hartford (10-8-2) for the Class S championship on Saturday or Sunday at Dillon Stadium in Hartford. The Lions beat No. 12 Coginchaug Regional-Durham, 4-0, in the other Class S semifinal, which was played at Waterbury’s Ray Snyder Sr. Field (Municipal Stadium).

Jenna Tracey, Devon Bushka and Grace D’Amico each scored a goal for Holy Cross in the win over Somers. Tracey scored in the first half while Bushka and D’Amico scored their goals in the second half. Rachel Healey made six saves for the clean sheet.

GIRLS SWIMMING

Bristol Central and Bristol Eastern competed in the Class L championship on Tuesday night at SCSU’s Hutchinson Natatorium. The Rams finished 15th out of 20 teams with 88 points while the Lancers were 20th with 36 points.

Central’s best finish of the night came from its 200-yard medley relay, which took 13th. The quartet of freshman Isabella Cordero, junior Nyomi Cordero, freshman Rayiah Reinhard and junior Katelyn Holleran finished the relay in 2:03.33. The Rams also chopped over eight seconds off their preliminary time in the 400 freestyle relay (4:05.83 final, 4:14.12 preliminary) behind the team of Holleran, sophomore Madison Pikiell, Isabella Cordero and Nyomi Cordero.

Eastern’s best time of the night came in 200 freestyle relay. The Lancers trimmed over 12 seconds off their preliminary time (2:02.38 final, 2:14.96 preliminary). The Eastern quartet featured freshman Morgan Thompson, senior Olivia Dossias, freshman Madison Caggiano and junior Samantha Rivard.
