Swim championships, semifinals on pitch and court on tap over next two days

Five teams from four local schools will either be competing for championships or playing for a spot in a championship final over the next two days.

Holy Cross girls soccer plays on Tuesday while the Bristol Central and Bristol Eastern girls swimming teams take to the pool. On Wednesday, Bristol Eastern girls volleyball competes on the court while St. Paul girls swimming heads into the pool. Here’s a quick look at the upcoming events:

TUESDAY
Class L swimming championship
6 p.m. at Hutchinson Natatorium, SCSU, New Haven
Note: Bristol Central and Bristol Eastern will compete against the best that Class L has to offer in this meet.

Class S girls soccer semifinal
No. 6 Somers (14-3-1) vs. No. 2 Holy Cross (17-3-1)
7 p.m. at Veteran’s Stadium, New Britain
Paths to the semifinal: Holy Cross – first round: bye; second round: 2-0 over No. 15 East Granby; quarterfinal round: 5-1 over No. 10 Thomaston. Somers – first round: bye; second round: 4-3 over No. 11 Old Lyme (PK3-1); quarterfinal round: 1-0 in overtime over Old Saybrook.
Note: This is not the first time the Crusaders and Spartans have matched up in a state tournament. In 2017, second-seeded Holy Cross defeated No. 18 Somers, 1-0, at Post University in a Class S second round contest.

WEDNESDAY
Class L girls volleyball semifinal
No. 11 Simsbury (18-6) vs. No. 10 Bristol Eastern (21-5)
6 p.m. at Northwest Catholic, West Hartford
Paths to the semifinal: Bristol Eastern – first round: 3-0 over No. 23 Torrington (25-22, 25-21, 25-13); second round: 3-0 over No. 26 Windsor (25-13, 26-24, 25-5); quarterfinal round: 3-0 over No. 18 St. Joseph-Trumbull (25-20, 25-10, 25-15). Simsbury – first round: 3-0 over No. 22 Newington (25-18, 25-11, 25-22); second round: 3-1 over No. 6 Suffield (25-17, 25-20, 24-26, 25-16); quarterfinal round: 3-2 over No. 3 East Lyme (25-23, 25-21, 17-25, 19-25, 15-13).
Note: The Lancers and Trojans are playing each other for the second time in as many postseason tournaments. Eastern defeated Simsbury, 3-1, in the CCC championship final at Simsbury High School. This is the first meeting between the Lancers and the Trojans in the state tournament, according to my research.

Class S swimming championship
6 p.m. at Cornerstone Aquatics Center, West Hartford
Note: St. Paul will compete against the best that Class S has to offer in this meet.
