Wolcott Scrappers go the distance in second round Tri-State series win

The Wolcott Scrappers had an up-and-down regular season, finishing with a 7-8 record.

The postseason has gone much better. Wolcott, which is the No. 6 seed in the Connecticut Tri-State Baseball League playoffs, has earned its way to the semifinal round, where it will play the No. 2 Tri-Town Trojans.

The Scrappers swept the No. 11 Burlington Hunters in their best-of-three first round series. Wolcott’s next challenge was the No. 3 Amenia Monarchs. The Scrappers were on the road for two of the three games last weekend, but they won both of those and stunned the Monarchs.

Wolcott won the first game, 5-1, on the night of July 30 at Doc Bartlett Field. Amenia took the second game, 13-9, on the afternoon of Aug. 1 in Wolcott. It came down to the third game on the afternoon of Aug. 2 at Doc Bartlett Field. The Scrappers won the game, 8-5, and advanced.

Here’s a bit about what happened in each game of the Wolcott-Amenia series:

Game 1 – Wolcott 5, Amenia 1

Ike Negretti starred on the mound with a complete-game effort. He struck out 11 and walked two while yielding a single run on seven hits. Negretti also had a single and two RBI. Matt Warren doubled, singled and drove in two runs while Steve Urbanski singled, scored a run and drove in another.

Game 2 – Amenia 13, Wolcott 9

Urbanski homered twice, scored twice and drove in six runs to lead the Scrappers. Warren homered, scored a run and drove in a run while Jason Sullivan (3 singles) and Ike Negretti (2 singles, run scored) each had multi-hit games.

Game 3 – Wolcott 8, Amenia 5

Jack Drewry homered, singled, scored a run and drove in four more as the Scrappers finished off the Monarchs. Warren doubled twice, scored twice and drove in a pair of runs while Urbanski singled twice, scored three times and drove in a run. Negretti added two singles.

Urbanski’s fourth inning single scored Tony Broadhurst for a 3-1 lead. Warren followed with a two-run double to plate winning pitcher Tyler Baldwin, who had singled, along with Urbanski. Drewry’s three-run homer gave the Scrappers an 8-1 lead and put the game away.

Wolcott plays Tri-Town on Friday in the first game of their best-of-three semifinal series at 5:30 p.m. at Litchfield’s Community Field.
