Holy Cross girls soccer captured the first state championship in program history last fall. If state tournaments were being played this fall, the Crusaders may well have added more hardware to the trophy case.
The 2020 version of Holy Cross is talented, and very deep. Head coach Phil Mongelluzzo can rotate players in and out of the lineup, and there isn’t much drop off. There is plenty of all-league and all-state talent to go around. The Crusaders would have been in Class M in the state tournament this year, and they would have held their own. There’s no guarantee that they would have captured a state championship, but the possibility was there. COVID-19 eliminated that opportunity.
Holy Cross came out scoring in its season opener on Saturday evening at Watertown, and the result was a 6-1 victory. The Crusaders scored three times in the first eight minutes and got a hat trick from senior Delia Murphy. Murphy is among multiple players who can control the ball, and the pace, of the game. Mongelluzzo can also rely upon other seniors like Alyssa Hebb, Alana Snow, Jenna Debiase, Paydon Bushka and Emma DeVico. The junior class features Devon Bushka, Ella Atkins, Maeve Perrone and Alexa Diorio. Mya Zaccagnini and Jenna Tracey are a pair of strong sophomores.
Holy Cross will be a tough team to beat in 2020.
