Lawton put together good effort in abbreviated first Division I softball season

Former Holy Cross softball standout Sarah Lawton was enjoying her first season of pitching at the NCAA Division I level when it abruptly ended Thursday due to concerns over the coronavirus pandemic.

Lawton, a graduate of Florida SouthWestern State College, moved up to softball’s highest level and helped her FGCU to a 19-8 record. Lawton was 8-4 in 17 appearances (12 starts) with one save and an ERA of 2.16. In 71.1 innings, Lawton gave up 28 runs (22 earned) on 60 hits and struck out 80 while walking just 15. Batters hit only .229 against her.

Lawton was ranked first on FGCU in ERA, appearances, complete games (3), saves (tied with 1), strikeouts and lowest batting average against. She twice struck out nine batters in a game, and she had seven games of six strikeouts or more.
