Christopher LeBeau (Bristol Eastern) and Terrell Patterson (Kaynor Tech) may only be sophomores, but they have been a big part of the success of the Southern Connecticut State University cross country, indoor track and outdoor track teams in 2018-2019.
The former local standouts helped the Owls capture a third straight Northeast-10 Conference outdoor track and field championship, and 17th overall. LeBeau and Patterson also helped SCSU complete a sweep of the NE-10 championships in cross country, indoor track and outdoor track. That’s right, the SCSU men won all three of those championships.
LeBeau took silver in the 5000m (14:56.79) and Patterson claimed bronze in the 1500m (3:54.93) at the NE-10 meet. At the NEICAAA New England Outdoor Championship meet, Patterson took silver in the 1500m (3:49.72) and helped the 4x800m relay (7:42.01) claim bronze. LeBeau took bronze in the 5000m (14:47.31).
Both LeBeau and Patterson earned NCAA Division II All-Region honors, LeBeau in the 5000m and Patterson in the 1500m.
Haley Knox, Eastern Connecticut State University track and field
This former Bristol Central standout ended her time competing in the Little East Conference with a bang.
Knox, a senior, took first place in the 3000m steeplechase (12:03.42) at the New England Alliance/Little East Conference meet at Fitchburg State University. Knox holds the school record in the event, and she became the first Warrior, male or female, to win the steeplechase at the NEA/LEC meet.
Knox also ran in the 1500m race, where she finished fourth (5:02.59). She later competed at the Division III New England championship meet, where she finished 10th in the 3000m steeplechase (11:42.60). She helped the 4x800m relay finish 10th (9:51.12). Knox just missed All-New England honors in each race. The top eight individuals and relays are named All-New England.
McKenna Driscoll, University of Saint Joseph softball
This former Bristol Central standout tore the cover off of the ball in her junior season with the Blue Jays.
Driscoll led USJ in doubles (12) and tied for the team lead home runs (3). She finished second in walks (10), batting average (.345), on-base percentage (.394) and slugging percentage (.517). Driscoll tied for third in hits (40), was fourth in at bats (116) and tied for fifth in runs scored (18).
Driscoll helped USJ win the Great Northeast Athletic Conference tournament title and advance to the regional round of the NCAA Division III tournament.
Elizabeth Lombardo, Roger Williams University softball
This former Holy Cross standout was a Commonwealth Coast Conference second team selection in her final season.
The third baseman hit .348 in 40 games, and she started all 40 that she played in. Lombardo led RWU in at bats (135), runs scored (27), hits (47), doubles (9), home runs (2), RBI (21), total bases (64) and slugging percentage (.474). She tied for second in triples (1) and was fourth in walks (11).
Lombardo transferred to RWU from Salve Regina University. She said she did so because she wanted to pursue a career in the medical field, and she wasn’t able to at Salve Regina, according to a story on the website of The Hawks’ Herald, the student newspaper at RWU. Lombardo had a solid season with the Hawks, and she has been working with the Bristol (R.I.) Fire Department, according to the story.
