The second-seeded Sacred Heart girls basketball team was upset by seventh-seeded Watertown, 37-36, in an NVL Tournament quarterfinal on Saturday at Holy Cross High School.
That was the biggest headline of the quarterfinal round for the local teams involved. Top-seeded St. Paul moved on with a 50-29 win over eighth-seeded Oxford while third-seeded Holy Cross dropped sixth-seeded Seymour 60-53. In the other quarterfinal, fifth-seeded Naugatuck defeated fourth-seeded Ansonia 52-45 in overtime.
The semifinals are Monday at Kennedy High School. The 5 p.m. semifinal pits Holy Cross against Watertown. After All-NVL teams are recognized in between games, the 7 p.m. contest has St. Paul playing against Naugatuck.
Holy Cross defeated Watertown 61-49 on Jan. 18, which was part of a nine-game winning streak. St. Paul and Naugatuck, Iron Division foes, met twice with the Falcons winning both games (53-36 on Jan. 8 and 55-41 on Feb. 8).
