St. Paul splits home doubleheader vs. Torrington

Fans of St. Paul and Torrington basketball packed the Rev. Brian Monnerat Gymnasium for a Friday night boy-girl doubleheader. Unfortunately for the Falcons, the Red Raider partisans were on the ones celebrating after the boys game.

Torrington outscored St. Paul by 17 points in the second half on the way to a 62-40 victory. The Raiders improved to 4-2 while the Falcons dropped to 2-5. Donovan Symes led St. Paul with nine points.

The Falcons and Raiders were tied at 13 after one quarter. The score was 21-19 Torrington before a late 3-pointer sent the Raiders into the halftime break ahead 24-19. A 20-8 third quarter helped Torrington run away with the game.

When the girls took the floor, St. Paul raced out to a 14-3 lead after one quarter on the way to a 58-37 victory over Torrington. The Raiders outscored the Falcons by five in the fourth quarter to make the final margin closer than it actually was. St. Paul improved to 7-2 and moved within a half-game of Watertown for the NVL’s best record. Torrington fell to 0-8 with the loss.

Janessa Gonzalez and Jade Udoh each tallied 12 points to lead the Falcons. Olivia Heslin struck for nine points while freshmen Zoey Rubins and Lillian Sirois connected for their first varsity points.

St. Paul has another doubleheader scheduled for this coming Tuesday when it faces Naugatuck. The girls play first at 5:30 p.m., followed by the boys at approximately 7:15. The girls game is a matchup of two-loss teams, with the Falcons at 7-2 and the Greyhounds at 6-2. The Naugatuck boys enter the nightcap of the doubleheader at 4-4 while St. Paul is 2-5.
