The Waterbury City Championships were held Friday at Montoe Park, with the Holy Cross girls and Kennedy boys emerging as the team champions.
Sacred Heart senior Jenna French won the girls race in 21:58.1 while Chase Collegiate junior Ethan Puc took first in the boys race in 16:30.5. Here’s what happened in each race:
Girls
French and sophomore teammate Melany Boivin may have taken first and third overall, but Holy Cross claimed up the second, seventh, eighth and 10th positions on the way to an eight-point win over Sacred Heart (49-57). It’s the third straight team championship for the Crusaders. For French, it’s her second straight city championship.
Senior Galvin Brayton finished second and was the top Holy Cross runner. She was followed by sophomore Racquel Rosa in seventh, sophomore Alyssa Sarracco in eighth, and freshman Cayla Howard in 10th. Freshman Megan Paolino rounded out the Crusader Top 5 with a 28th place finish overall.
The other three runners in Sacred Heart’s Top 5 were freshman Jyllian Geffert in 13th, senior Arreyion Yates in 22nd, and sophomore Jasmine Walton in 23rd.
Waterbury Career Academy was third overall with a score of 61, followed by Kennedy in fourth with 75 and Kaynor Tech in fifth with 105. The top runner for each team was Jonna Pierce for WCA (sophomore, fourth place), Jordyn Wilson for Kennedy (senior, ninth), and Melanie Sanchez for Kaynor Tech (senior, sixth). Chase freshman Loren Tuck took fifth place overall.
Boys
Puc won the race, but Kennedy took the second, seventh, eighth, 13th and 14th positions on the way to another team championship. The Eagles also took the top team spot in 2017.
Junior Alex Brites finished second overall and was the top Kennedy runner. He was followed by sophomore Derek Yates in seventh, senior Sergio Guevara in eighth, junior Sebastian Rosario in 13th, and senior Aaron Lamar in 14th.
Kennedy finished 16 points ahead of second place Chase (44-60). After Puc’s first place finish, there was sophomore Rafael Mahario in fourth, freshman Tommy Lapham in 12th, sophomore Colby Calabrese in 17th, and senior Robby Jones in 26th.
Holy Cross was third overall with a score of 76, followed by Sacred Heart in fourth at 79, WCA in fifth at 121, Kaynor Tech in sixth at 159, Crosby in seventh at 161, and Wilby in eighth at 221. The top runner for each team was Ben Bowler for Holy Cross (senior, fifth place), Fujie Lan (junior, 10th), Harrison Foley for WCA (junior, sixth), Scott Dalesio for Kaynor Tech (junior, 16th), Elijah Lewis for Crosby (senior, third), and Nabeel Ali for Wilby (senior, 40th).
