Many area schools got their regular seasons underway on Friday, what was supposed to be the first full day of high school fall sports. There were some postponements, and it could have been because teams didn’t meet the necessary 10-practice requirement mandated by CIAC rules (I had that happen at my full-time job in Southington, where the Lady Knight field hockey team’s opponent had to postpone after not meeting the practice paramaters). Here’s what happened in the games that were played on Friday.
Girls soccer
Holy Cross turned Friday’s season-opening NVL showdown against St. Paul into a Crusader showcase with a 5-1 win in Bristol. Adalisse Padilla had a hat trick for Holy Cross, which won the matchup between the 2017 NVL tournament finalists.
The debut of the Sacred Heart/Kaynor Tech girls soccer team didn’t go well as the co-op lost a lopsided contest to Woodland. The Bristol Central girls lost their match to Plainville.
Football
On the gridiron, Bristol Central dominated Hartford Public on the way to a 34-0 home victory. Justus Fitzpatrick ran for two touchdowns and threw for another one, and the Ram defense stifled the Owl offense.
Wolcott was shut out by Naugatuck 14-0 at home. WCA was hammered by Ansonia, a tough season opener for any team. Bristol Eastern lost 23-7 at home to E.O. Smith.
Boys soccer
Holy Cross and St. Paul ended in a 2-2 tie at Alumni Field in Waterbury. Brian Silva had both goals for the Crusaders while Adam Van Linter and Danny Bond scored one each for the Falcons.
The Crosby boys opened up with a 2-1 win over Wilby at Wilby High School. Tyson Hunter scored once for the Bulldogs, who also got an own goal from the Wildcats. Djorry Joseph scored for Wilby.
The Sacred Heart and WCA boys each lost by the score of 3-0 while Bristol Central was downed by Plainville.
Girls volleyball
Holy Cross was the lone volleyball winner, topping Torrington by a score of 3-0. The Crusaders won a pair of tight sets, 26-24 and 25-22, before closing out the match with a 25-7 tally in the third set. Lizzy Diorio had 17 digs and one ace, Julia Dzinski provided eight kills, eight digs and two aces, and Jalin Waters added 12 assists, six digs and one ace.
WCA, Kennedy and Kaynor Tech each lost their openers.
Cross country
Bristol Eastern sophomore Avery Braccia was 13th overall in the girls 5K varsity race at the 2018 Blue Dragon Invitational in Middletown. Junior Kelsie St. Germain was 36th for the Lancers, who took 10th place overall.
Eastern junior Nicholas Provenzano finished 30th overall in the boys 5K varsity race , and the Lancers finished 11th overall. Sophomore Seth Anderson took third place in the 5K junior varsity race for Eastern, which finished sixth overall.
