There were a pair of area high school football matchups on Saturday. One was one-sided, and the other came down to a two-point conversion play for the win.
Football
Three different Holy Cross players scored two touchdowns in a 58-0 thumping of Brass City foe Crosby at Alumni Field.
Qaron Brown had two receiving touchdowns from quarterback Drevon Yeldell while Alex Ward and Pat Giancarli each rushed for two touchdowns. Tommy Ayash had a rushing touchdown, and Connor Goggin had a spectacular interception and return for a touchdown on defense. Goggin snagged the ball with his left hand, then ran it back for the score.
Kennedy earned a tight 21-20 win over city foe Sacred Heart/Kaynor Tech at Ray Snyder Sr. Field. The co-op cut their deficit to a point in the waning moments of the fourth quarter on a Saijon McIntosh catch and run for a score and elected to for two points and the win. A low snap on the conversion attempt was recovered by Kennedy’s Cassius Arnold, however, and the Eagles held on for the one-point win. Kennedy is the two-time defending Brass Division champion, but Sacred Heart/Kaynor Tech almost handed them a loss in their first division game. Matt Torres had two rushing touchdowns for the Eagles.
St. Paul lost 43-14 to Seymour at home. Kevin Ashworth threw a 13-yard touchdown pass to Max Peruta at the end of the first half to make the deficit 21-6. Sam Rapp added a touchdown run in the fourth quarter for the game’s final score.
Wilby lost 42-0 to Oxford in the first game of the day at Snyder Field.
Cross Country
The Bristol Central boys finished seventh as a team in the 40th Haddad Windham Invitational’s Boys Varsity Race #1 at Windham High School. The Rams were led by junior Mark Petrosky, who took 21st place. Sophomore teammate Nate Deangelo wasn’t far back in 29th, and senior Pacifico Flores was right behind him in 34th. Junior Ben Stafford wound up in 40th place, and senior Devin Flores gave Central five runners in the Top 50 with his 48th place finish.
Soccer
The Kennedy boys were downed 4-2 by Watertown, and the Chase Collegiate girls lost their season opener at King School.
