For some, the state tournament has begun. For others, it’s unfortunately over. For most, the postseason begins this week.
Six local teams played in qualifying round contests on Friday and Saturday, but only one emerged with a victory. That was the No. 13 St. Paul girls lacrosse team, which defeated No. 20 Somers, 13-8, in a Class S qualifier on Friday. Cameron Baston led the Falcons with four goals while Reagan Davis, Emily Walker and Greta Panke each tallied three goals. St. Paul’s reward for a qualifying round win is a first round matchup at No. 4 Tolland on Tuesday at 5 p.m.
The No. 20 Wolcott girls tennis team dropped a tough one in its Class M qualifier, 4-3, against No. 20 Tolland at Fulton Park in Waterbury. The Bristol Central girls and Holy Cross boys lost qualifiers, as did the Holy Cross and Bristol Co-op boys lacrosse teams.
There were also teams who played in the first round. The No. 4 Holy Cross girls tennis team moved on to the quarterfinal round of Class S with a 5-2 win over No. 13 Notre Dame-Fairfield on Saturday. The Crusaders advanced by sweeping three doubles matches behind the teams of Jayme Erdtmann-Rachel Honegger, Lyvia Bartoli-CC Bunlue, and Fiona Murphy-Cailyn Gorman. Holy Cross also got singles victories from Ella Mancini and Kaya Bonderenko.
The No. 11 Sacred Heart girls tennis team fell to No. 6 Shepaug, 7-0, in Class S on Friday. The No. 13 Bristol Eastern boys tennis team dropped a 7-0 decision to No. 4 Wethersfield in Class L on Friday.
