BRISTOL BASEBALL ROUNDUP: Juniors claim NE Regional title; Knights eliminated

The Bristol Junior American Legion baseball team ended the season in terrific fashion with a Northeast Regional championship last weekend.

Post 2, the Connecticut state champion, defeated top Rhode Island squad South Kingstown Post 39 by a score of 6-1 last Sunday in a rain-shortened game at Veterans Memorial Park in Windsor Locks. Bristol can add a Northeast Regional championship to the state title it had already captured. Junior Legion doesn’t progress further than the regional stage.

In the regional final, Post 2 took advantage of some Post 39 mistakes and scored early and often in the lone comfortable victory they enjoyed in the regional. Bristol needed to rally in its opener to beat Rhode Island runner-up Cranston (Elmwood Sports Auburn Post 20) 6-5 in eight innings last Friday. Another comeback was needed in the second game last Saturday when Post 2 defeated New Hampshire champion Dover Post 8 4-3.

No comeback was necessary in the final as Anthony Marrotti and the defense kept South Kingstown at bay. Bristol finished the season with a stellar record of 29-4.

Knights come up one game short

The Bristol Knights couldn’t get their bats going in a Connecticut  elimination game on Thursday evening against the defending champion Chicago Sam’s Orioles at Muzzy Field.

Bristol, the No. 2 seed, lost top top-seeded Chicago Sam’s 4-0 and was knocked out of the CTL Playoffs one game shy of the ultimate goal, the best-of-three championship series. The Orioles are playing the fifth-seeded Brickhouse Indians in the series, which is being held at Muzzy. Games 2 and 3 were scheduled for tonight, weather permitting.
