The Southern Connecticut State University men’s indoor track and field team has had plenty of local talent over the years, and that’s the case again for the 2021-2022 season.
The Owls competed in the Yale Season Opener on Dec. 11 at Coxe Cage in New Haven, and a pair of newcomers stood out. Freshman Messiah Harling, a former Wilby star, took eighth place in the 60-meter dash in 7.12 seconds. Freshman Aidan Knappe, a former Sacred Heart High standout, claimed sixth place in the 800-meter run in 2:04.19. SCSU went up against Yale, New Haven, Quinnipiac, Sacred Heart and Columbia.
The Owls have a strong local veteran presence on the roster, led by Chris LeBeau (Bristol Eastern), Terrell Patterson (Kaynor Tech) and Bernardo Mbaya (Crosby). Sophomore Tariq Phillips (Kennedy) is also on the team. There’s also assistant coach Cy McIntosh, who was a standout at Bristol Central.
