Waterbury Senior Legion’s win streak ends at five games

The Waterbury Post 1 Senior American Legion baseball team had won five straight games entering Tuesday night’s contest against next-door neighbor Oakville at Municipal Stadium.

The game, originally scheduled for 8 p.m., started over a half hour late because the prior game ran late. Waterbury never got going and Oakville ran away with a 14-0 win in five innings, according to the result reported by Post 195 to the Waterbury Republican-American late Tuesday night. Oakville’s Dom Rinaldi fired a two-hit shutout while teammates Ryan Dunfee, Hayden Beauty and Robert Johnston all had three hits to pace the offense. Oakville scored four runs in the top of the first inning, then erupted for seven in the third to blow the game open. Justin Guerrera and Cam DeFeo each had two hits.

Rinaldi, Beauty, Johnston, Guerrera and DeFeo may sound familiar to Waterbury fans, and that’s because they all played for NVL foe Watertown High School during the spring season. Oakville Legion improved to 8-2 in Zone 5, 9-2 overall.

Waterbury dropped to 5-5 in Zone 5 and overall. Post 1 started the season 0-4, then won five straight games, including two each against Shelton and Danbury. Mike Keating started for Waterbury against Oakville, but timely hits, some walks and defensive mistakes allowed Post 195 to quickly run away with the game.

Waterbury continues a very busy week today against Washington at Ted Alex Field at 5:45 p.m. Post 1 hosts Bethel on Thursday at 8 p.m. at Municipal, then goes to Bethel for a pair of games on Saturday, with the first beginning at 5 p.m. For good measure, Waterbury hosts Naugatuck at 11 a.m. on Sunday when the calendar changes to July. Post 1 is not scheduled to play a game after that until July 5, though that will be a doubleheader at Danbury.
