WOLCOTT’S WEEKLY ROUNDUP #8: Eagle dance team captures third straight NVL title

The Wolcott dance team has had a remarkable run in the NVL over the past three seasons.
OK, so dance isn’t a CIAC-sanctioned sport, but the Eagles need to be acknowledged for what they have accomplished. Wolcott recently captured its third straight NVL championship, quite the feat for any program.
The Eagles have a strong dance program, as noted by the runner-up finish in one division in a state championship meet last season. Wolcott finished first in the Jazz Division-Large portion of the state meet two years ago.
The Eagles have also been a power when it comes to cheerleading, when one looks back at the list of state champions. At the state level, dance and cheerleading competitions are conducted by the Connecticut Student Activities Committee, under the authority of the Connecticut Association of Schools.
The NVL cheerleading championships are today at Crosby High School.
When you’re being entertained by the Wolcott dance and cheerleading teams during games, it’s being done by some of the best that the NVL, and the state, has to offer.

GIRLS BASKETBALL
Wolcott closed the regular season on Tuesday with a 35-26 win over Naugatuck on the road.
Raven Cody, Megan Doubleday, Jenna Hoban and Alayna Greene led the offense in the low-scoring affair. Cody was the lone player in double figures. The Eagles finished the regular season 11-9, 9-9 in the NVL.
Wolcott is the No. 8 seed entering today’s quarterfinal round of the NVL Tournament. The Eagles play top-seeded Holy Cross, which won 55-24 on Dec. 21 in Wolcott.
Note: There will be separate round-ups on the NVL Tournament.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Wolcott played three games last week and went 1-2 to drop to 6-13 on the season.
The Eagles started the week with a 58-50 road win over Woodland on Monday. Chris Harris and Preston Lavoie each double figures as Wolcott used a balanced attack to knock off the Hawks. The Eagles were down two points entering the fourth quarter, but outscored their opponent 19-9 in the final eight minutes to win.
On Tuesday, Wolcott was back home but couldn’t knock off Naugatuck, losing by the score of 55-49. Pat Drewry was the lone Eagle in double figures, though it was a balanced attack with Harris, Lavoie, Mike Tessarzik and Mike Rousseau all netting five points or more.
Thursday was a tough night for Wolcott, which lost 80-59 to Wilby on the road. Jack and Pat Drewry were both in double figures while Harris and Rousseau again contributed to the Eagle attack.
Wolcott is 35th in Class M, with the Top 32 going to the tournament. The Eagles host Ansonia (6-12) on Wednesday in the regular season finale. The Chargers are 33rd in Class M. Pairings for the state tournament aren’t officially released until March 1.
INDOOR TRACK STATE RECAP
Wolcott picked up three Top 5 individual finishes at Monday’s Class M state meet at the Floyd Little Athletic Center.
Jonathan Maldonado recorded a fourth place finish while Cynthia Dias and Kathryn Rodrigues each took home fifth place.
