Several local athletes competed in the final track and field events of the season on Tuesday and Wednesday at Willow Brook Park in New Britain.

By far the highlight of the two days was the victory by St. Paul junior Christian Sturm in the hammer throw. Sturm’s best was 158 feet, 5 inches, and that was enough to secure first place.
Sturm’s event was part of the decathlon, heptathlon, steeplechase and hammer throw competitions held every year, mostly in New Britain.
Sturm wasn’t the only local highlight though.
Bristol Eastern senior Christopher LeBeau nabbed third in the boys 3000-meter steeplechase. LeBeau crossed the finish line in 10:04.79. Bristol Central junior Matthew Roy was 10th in the same event.
In the boys 2000-meter steeplechase, Eastern freshman Jake Woznicki took fifth place.
The best local finish in the girls 2000-meter steeplechase came from Sacred Heart sophomore Stephanie Sullivan, who placed 16th.
Wolcott senior Cynthia Dias had the highest finish of any local in the heptathlon. She placed 29th overall, but was able to put together a third place effort in the javelin. Javelin has been a strong event for Dias throughout her senior season.
St. Paul junior Jake Sanzone turned in a 34th place finish in the decathlon, the best of any local athlete. Sanzone’s best placement was 13th in the 400-meter dash.
