Holy Cross football plays first game at Alumni Field

It was a hot Saturday for what is not quite mid-September, but the sun was shining and Holy Cross High School was ready to make history.

The shade was a good place to be Saturday for Holy Cross and Kennedy
football fans who came to Alumni Field to watch the game.

The Crusaders played their first football game on the grass surface of Alumni Field on Saturday afternoon against Kennedy. Former head coach Mike Phelan served as the emcee for the pregame festivities.
“Good afternoon and welcome to Alumni Field,” Phelan said.
Holy Cross President Frank Samuelson addressed the crowd, then Alumni Football Committee member Paul Matsavage did the same. A blessing was given by Msgr. Thomas Ginty, then former athletic director Jim Cunningham did the honors on the coin toss.
The field is a beautiful example of what can be accomplished in just six short months. Matasavage said there are still two more phases to go in the plan.

Holy Cross players and coaches look on during the game. Behind them are hills
which are terrific for spectators who take in the game. The shade was especially good.
