Football wrap: Wolcott can’t keep up with Seymour

Wolcott football couldn’t overcome the video game-like numbers of Seymour quarterback Jaylen Kelley in a 61-41 NVL loss on Friday night at Joe Monroe Field.
Kelley completed 10 of 13 passes for an insane 361 yards and four touchdowns, according to stats posted on MaxPreps.com. As if that wasn’t enough, Kelley also ran 33 times for 250 yards and three more scores. When all was set and done, Kelley accounted for 611 yards and seven touchdowns. It was just too much for the Eagles to overcome.
For Wolcott, Nate Filippone ran nine times for 147 yards and a touchdown. He also caught a touchdown pass from Rocky Griffin. Griffin was 19 of 28 for 318 yards, four touchdowns and one interception. The Eagles trailed 28-27 at halftime, but the Wildcats used a big third quarter to begin to pull away. A key play came when Seymour’s Mikey Burns recovered a fumble and returned it for a touchdown that put the visitors ahead 49-33. Wolcott never got closer than 14 points the rest of the way.
The loss drops the Eagles out of the Class S playoff chase for now in ninth place (the top eight qualify). The win puts the Wildcats in fifth. Wolcott has another tough task this coming Friday when it plays at Ansonia, a team it has never beaten.
