This date in history: St. Paul baseball upends undefeated Holy Cross

Holy Cross baseball was undefeated through the first 18 games of the 2017 season. The Crusaders appeared to be on their way to a 19th straight win when they built a four-run lead against St. Paul.

When the game played on May 16 ended, however, it was the Falcons who celebrated an 8-5 home win. St. Paul improved to 15-3 and handed Holy Cross (18-1) its first loss.

Andrew Owsianko launched a big three-run home run, and Ryan Greene provided the winning blow for the Falcons with a bases-clearing triple to make the score 8-5 in the bottom of the sixth inning.

On the Crusader side of the scoreboard, Matt Bonvicini launched a solo home run that traveled at least 400 feet. The blast cleared the field’s fence, and the property fence behind it.

Here is my story from the game.
