This date in history: Fran Phelan Jr. extends personal win streak to 20 games

The date was May 14, 2018, and the place was Waterbury’s Municipal Stadium. Holy Cross senior right-handed pitcher Fran Phelan Jr. was putting together yet another strong outing.

Phelan fired a complete-game, two-hit shutout and in a 5-0 win over Sacred Heart. He threw 70 of his 93 pitches for strikes. Seventeen of the 24 batters Phelan faced saw a first-pitch strike. He struck out 13, didn’t issue a walk, and didn’t hit a batter.

Phelan later added two more victories to run his win streak to 22 games. The streak, which ended in the Class S state semifinals, began during his freshman season. Phelan finished his career with a record of 29-6.

Phelan transferred from Central Connecticut State University to Eastern Connecticut State University. He had all four years of eligibility after transferring. ECSU only played five games before the season was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Here is my story about Phelan’s 20th straight win.
