Legend Johnson, Western Connecticut State University basketball
This former Sacred Heart standout has played in all eight games for the Colonials, including four starts, and he is one of the team’s top shooters.
Johnson, a sophomore, is averaging 7.1 points and 3.1 rebounds in 18.9 minutes per game. He has connected on 94.4 percent of his foul shots (17-18) and 54.3 percent of his field goal attempts (19-35). Johnson is even shooting 50 percent on his limited three-point attempts (2-4). He has played 151 minutes in eight games.
Johnson has started the last four games for WCSU, and his nine points in an 85-75 win over Eastern Connecticut State University on Dec. 5 were his most since he had 14 against New Paltz on Nov. 13.
Ashley Elder, SNHU indoor track and field
This former Bristol Central multiple-sport athlete is used to breaking records, and she did it again in the first meet of the season for SNHU.
Elder, a senior, set a school record in the shot put with a throw of 14.46 meters, or about 47.44 feet. The toss happened during the UMass-Boston Indoor Winter Opener. Elder also took second place in the weight throw with a toss of 14.93 meters (48.98 feet).
Elder’s toss in the shot put was more than 7.5 feet further than her nearest competitor at the meet. Elder made the Northeast-10 Conference Weekly Honor Roll and was selected as an SNHU Athlete of the Week.
Emma Flynn, Amherst College ice hockey
This Wolcott native and sophomore made the New England Small College Athletics Association Weekly Honor Roll after a strong effort on the ice.
Flynn tallied three assists as Amherest rolled to a 5-0 victory over Trinity College on Nov. 30. Flynn assisted on the first goal for the Mammoths, then tallied one each on the fourth and fifth goals of the match. The three assists were the first three of the season for Flynn.
For her career to date (32 games), Flynn has recorded seven goals and 13 assists for 20 points.
Matt Finke, Mitchell College basketball
This former Wolcott High guard has started every game for the Mariners so far, and he recently posted a season-high 13 points.
Finke scored the 13 points in an 86-58 win over Elms College on Dec. 4. The win was the first for Mitchell in the New England Collegiate Conference. Finke played 27 minutes and was 5-of-11 from the floor, including 3-of-9 on three-point attempts. He also blocked a shot the Mariners improved to 2-3.
Through five games, Finke is averaging 7.4 points on 43.8 percent shooting from the floor (14-32). He is 44.4 percent on three-point attempts (8-18).
Kim Hylan, Sacred Heart University swimming and diving
This senior and former St. Paul standout competed in the ECAC Winter Championships for the Pioneers and was part of a couple Top 10 finishes.
Hylan helped Sacred Heart’s 800-freestyle relay claim eighth place on Day 1 of the championships, which was Nov. 30. She was the first swimmer in the pool for the Pioneers in that relay.
On the third day of the championships (Dec. 2), Hylan took ninth place in the 200 freestyle relay.
Hylan and Sacred Heart are off for winter break and return to action on Jan. 26 against Monmouth.
