Great efforts from locals at NVL indoor track meet

Six local teams won gold medals at Monday’s NVL Indoor Track & Field Championships at the Floyd Little Athletic Center in New Haven. Two of those teams had an individual claim two gold medals.

Wolcott had two double winners, Kathryn Rodrigues and Nicholas Bendtsen. Rodrigues and Bendtsen made it an Eagle sweep in the girls and boys 1600 and 3200m runs. Rodrigues ran 5:18.27 in the 1600m and 11:40.89 in the 3200m. Bendtsen ran 4:43.49 in the 1600m and 10:25.45 in the 3200m.

Sacred Heart sensation Edward Williams Jr. was also a double winner, capturing gold in the 55m dash and 55m hurdles. Williams ran 6.63 in the dash and 7.66 in the hurdles.

Raquel Rosa gave Holy Cross an individual gold in the 300m dash (43.50), Elijah Lewis of Crosby captured gold in the 1000m (2:46.26), and Messiah Harling of Wilby took gold in the long jump (21 feet, 6 inches).

Three of the four boys relays contested were won by city schools. Wilby took gold in the 4x200m relay (1:36.46) behind the team of Dylen McKitty, Harling, Daniel Navarro and Leonardo DaGraca. Kennedy took gold in the 4×800 (9:01.20) behind the quartet of Alexander Brites, Michael Trinkely, William Mahony and Aaron Lamar. Crosby wrapped up gold in the 1600 sprint medley (3:53.02) behind its foursome of Jose Leon, Maurice Mathews, Malik Patrick and Lewis.

The city had some great efforts in relays that didn’t win. The boys 4×200 relay went Wilby, Kennedy and Sacred Heart in the Top 3. Kennedy was second in the 4×400 relay, Wilby was second in the 1600 sprint medley, and Sacred Heart was fourth in the 4×800 relay.
